Udaipur: Newly admitted students of Rabindranath Tagore Medical College visited the residence of Dr. Manju Jain and Dr. P.C. Jain, where they were introduced to sustainable practices including rooftop rainwater harvesting and solar cooking.
The students learned about the functioning of the rooftop rainwater harvesting system installed at the residence. The system collects rainwater falling on rooftops and helps recharge groundwater, enabling water to be conserved for future use.
According to information shared during the programme, groundwater is being extensively used by households in the city, while only a small proportion of homes are contributing to groundwater recharge through rainwater harvesting. The students were informed that wider adoption of rainwater harvesting could play an important role in addressing the risk of future water shortages.
The students also got an opportunity to see a solar cooker for the first time and learned how different food items can be prepared using solar energy. Dr. Manju Jain, who has been cooking with a solar cooker for the past 43 years, described it as a “blessing for working women.”
She explained that food prepared in a solar cooker retains its nutritional value, taste and natural qualities. She has also created a WhatsApp group called “Friends of Solar Cooker”, where members regularly share recipes and experiences related to solar cooking.
Students including Manasvi, Nidhi Gupta, Khushi, Yashanshi, Nikita, Anuj, Rohit and Sankalp participated in the programme.
The initiative provided the students with practical exposure to simple and sustainable technologies that can contribute to water conservation, renewable energy use and environmentally responsible living.
