After 30 Years of Medical Struggle, 80-Year-Old Woman Successfully Undergoes Complex Surgery at Geetanjali Hospital

Udaipur: After nearly three decades of health-related difficulties and unsuccessful attempts to identify the underlying cause, an 80-year-old woman has finally received treatment for a complex bile duct disorder at Geetanjali Hospital. Senior Gastro and Liver Surgeon Dr. Hemant Jain, along with his team, successfully performed an advanced laparoscopic surgery, enabling the patient to recover satisfactorily and return home within just four days. The case presented a significant surgical challenge due to the patient's advanced age, multiple stones in the bile duct, infection and abnormal enlargement of the duct to approximately 3.5–4 centimetres. Accurate Diagnosis Uncovers the Cause of Years of Illness The patient had been suffering from health problems for approximately 25–30 years and had sought treatment at several places without receiving a definitive diagnosis. Detailed investigations at Geetanjali Hospital revealed a congenital condition known as a choledochal cyst, in which the bile duct becomes abnormally enlarged. The condition can remain undetected for years and may eventually lead to complications such as recurrent gallstone formation within the bile duct, repeated infections and an increased long-term risk of bile duct cancer. Identifying the underlying abnormality was a crucial step towards providing the patient with appropriate treatment. Advanced Keyhole Surgery Addresses a Complex Condition Given the patient's age and the severity of the condition, the surgical team undertook a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. Dr. Hemant Jain performed a laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision with hepaticojejunostomy. During the operation, the abnormally enlarged bile duct cyst was completely removed, and the bile duct was connected to the small intestine to re-establish the flow of bile. Despite the complexity of the procedure, the operation was successful. The patient's postoperative condition remained stable, and her recovery progressed satisfactorily, allowing her to be discharged on the fourth day. Dr. Jain Highlights the Importance of Timely Treatment Dr. Hemant Jain explained that choledochal cysts are congenital abnormalities that may not always be detected during childhood. Some cases remain undiagnosed until adulthood or even advanced age. Recurring abdominal pain, jaundice, fever, vomiting and repeated bile duct infections may indicate an underlying bile duct disorder. However, some patients may not experience prominent symptoms for a long period. He emphasised that timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment by specialists are essential to prevent complications. Untreated choledochal cysts can lead to recurrent infections, stone formation and an increased risk of cancer over time. Patients experiencing abdominal pain accompanied by fever or jaundice should seek prompt medical attention. Coordinated Medical Teamwork Ensures Successful Recovery The successful procedure was supported by a multidisciplinary team. The anaesthesia team included Dr. Anush Jain and Dr. Neel, while the surgical team comprised Dr. Bhuvana, Dr. Susan, Dr. Harikant and Dr. Neeraj. Operating theatre staff members Jitendra, Arvind, Taruna and Rahul also contributed significantly to the procedure. The patient's successful recovery highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis, specialised surgical expertise and coordinated medical care in treating complex conditions, particularly among elderly patients.
