Udaipur: A team of doctors at the Department of Ophthalmology, Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital, has successfully performed a complex retinal surgery on a patient who had been struggling with severe vision loss, bringing significant improvement in his eyesight.
Laxman Ji, the patient, arrived at the hospital around 15 days ago, accompanied by his son. He had been unable to see through his left eye for nearly 15 years due to an old retinal detachment and complicated cataract. In recent months, he had also completely lost vision in his right eye.
Medical examinations revealed chronic total retinal detachment in the right eye. Prolonged separation of the retina had caused it to become severely stiff, making surgical intervention particularly challenging. The patient also had a previously implanted intraocular lens that was not in its normal position.
Under the guidance of Dr. Rishi Mehta, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Preeti Jain and her team successfully performed the surgery using a combination of scleral buckling, vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade techniques. The procedure was supported by Sita, a nurse from the Retina OPD.
During a follow-up visit 10 days after surgery, the patient showed encouraging improvement in his vision. In an emotional moment, he was able to recognise his treating doctor and expressed happiness at seeing the medical team.
The achievement highlights the expertise and commitment of the ophthalmology team and demonstrates the possibilities offered by advanced retinal surgical techniques in treating patients with longstanding and complex vision disorders.
The successful outcome also underlines the importance of specialised eye care and timely medical intervention in managing challenging retinal conditions.
