Holi and Jumma Namaz: A Test of Harmony

Dr. Atul Malikram (Political Strategist)

The festival of Holi symbolizes colors, joy, and mutual brotherhood. It is not just a festival but an integral part of Indian culture, representing unity in diversity. However, in recent years, it has been observed that whether it is Holi, Diwali, Eid, or Bakrid, festivals often get entangled in political debates before their celebration.

A recent example is the statement by Anjum Ara, the Mayor of Darbhanga district in Bihar, where she requested that Holi celebrations be paused for two hours due to Jumma Namaz. In response, BJP MLA Murari Mohan Jha firmly stated that Holi will not be stopped, and the Muslim community should adjust their prayer timing accordingly. Meanwhile, MLA Karnail Singh also urged that Jumma Namaz be offered at home.

It is important to reflect on why the administration and political leaders have to make such statements. There are multiple perspectives on this issue, but a reasonable approach would be for both society and the administration to handle such situations with patience and understanding. While no community has the right to disrupt another’s religious celebrations, mutual respect for each other's faith is equally essential.

If Holi can be celebrated a little earlier or later, then Namaz can also be adjusted in exceptional circumstances. However, the statement made by Sambhal’s CO Anuj Chaudhary, saying "If applying colors defiles someone’s religion, they should stay at home," is not a responsible remark from an administrative officer. The role of the administration should be to unite society, not to create divisions.

The beauty of India lies in its ability to bring together people of different religions, castes, and ideologies. Unfortunately, every year, communal harmony is being challenged under various pretexts. What is truly needed is that we see the coincidence of Holi and Namaz not as a conflict but as an opportunity for harmony.

Both communities must respect each other's sentiments and refrain from actions that could lead to unrest. The administration should also issue appeals that promote unity rather than division.

This Holi, let us all pledge that no color will be greater than love and brotherhood, and no prayer will be greater than humanity.
