World Kidney Day: Stay Aware, Take Care of Kidney Health

Udaipur: On the occasion of World Kidney Day, it becomes crucial to recognize the increasing problem of kidney diseases in India, detect it early, and raise awareness about its care. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects nearly 10% of the Indian population, with over one lakh cases of kidney failure reported annually. Sadly, 90% of those suffering from severe kidney disease die due to the inability to afford treatment. Additionally, kidney disease increases the risk of heart-related problems.

However, many people are still unaware of kidney health, which often leads to delayed diagnosis and unsuccessful treatment. Early detection of kidney disease and lifestyle changes are crucial in reducing the risk of kidney problems. Regular check-ups, especially for those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease, can help detect the disease early and begin timely treatment. Simple lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, controlling blood pressure and blood sugar, reducing salt intake, and staying physically active, can help keep your kidneys healthy.

Digital health platforms are proving to be quite helpful in educating people about kidney disease and providing telemedicine support, especially in areas with limited healthcare services. Dr. Ashutosh Soni, Nephrology Consultant at Paras Health, Udaipur, said, "Kidney disease often goes unnoticed in its early stages, making regular check-ups necessary. Many people remain unaware of their condition until significant damage has been done. By promoting kidney health education and encouraging regular check-ups, we can prevent complications and improve treatment outcomes. On this World Kidney Day, we urge everyone to take proactive steps in caring for their kidneys because prevention is always better than treatment."

Access to affordable and quality kidney care remains a challenge, especially for economically disadvantaged communities who still struggle with the costs of treatment. Strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving early diagnosis, and increasing awareness about kidney health should be top priorities. On this World Kidney Day, let us commit to prioritizing kidney health and ensuring that timely intervention and preventive measures are accessible to all.
