Successful Surgery of a Three-Month-Old Infant Suffering from Choledochal Cyst at PMCH

Udaipur. A three-month-old infant underwent successful surgery for a condition known as Choledochal Cyst at Pacific Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The successful operation involved a team of pediatric and neonatal surgeons, including Dr. Praveen Jhanwar, Dr. Arpit Oberoi, Dr. Prakash Audichya, Dr. Prashant, Dr. Punit, Dr. Sunny, Dr. Palak, Vishnu, Sanjay, and Manish.

The infant, Deepansh, a resident of Mahadevphala in Dungarpur district, had been suffering from persistent abdominal pain and vomiting for the past one and a half months. Despite showing him to a local doctor, the problem persisted. The family then took the child to Pacific Hospital, located in Bhilon Ka Bedla, where Dr. Praveen Jhanwar examined the child. After necessary tests and an MRI, it was revealed that the child had an abnormal swelling in the bile duct, a condition known as a Choledochal Cyst. This condition could only be treated through surgery.

In order to save the child, the doctors decided to perform surgery immediately. The team of expert surgeons successfully performed an exploratory laparotomy, during which the Choledochal Cyst was removed along with a cholecystectomy and hepato-duodenostomy procedure. This was a complex and high-risk surgery, but the skilled surgeons at PMCH were able to carry it out successfully.

Dr. Praveen Jhanwar, pediatric and neonatal surgeon at PMCH, explained that Choledochal Cyst is a rare congenital issue where the bile duct becomes abnormally enlarged. If not treated in time, it can lead to severe complications. Dr. Jhanwar emphasized that Choledochal Cyst is a serious but rare condition seen in newborns and young children. If detected early and treated with surgery, it can be completely cured. He advised that if young children show symptoms such as recurring abdominal pain, vomiting, or jaundice, immediate consultation with a doctor should be sought.

Dr. Palak Jain added that after the surgery, the infant was kept under observation in the Pediatric ICU, where continuous monitoring was carried out. Post-surgery, the child’s condition remained stable, and there were no serious complications. After a few days of care in the ICU and ward, the infant was discharged once fully recovered. The patient’s family expressed their gratitude to PMCH’s chairman Rahul Agarwal, all the doctors, management, nursing staff, and other hospital staff for their excellent care.
