Udaipur: Yashvardhan Ranawat, Vice President of the Hotel Association Udaipur and Charter President of Business Circle India Tourism, sent a letter (Letter No: BCI/2025-26/41, dated 18/02/2025) to Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, requesting immediate intervention regarding the deteriorating condition of Udaipur’s historic lakes, citing severe neglect and pollution.
In his letter, Ranawat highlighted the poor condition of key lakes such as Pichola, Kumharia Talab, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Fateh Sagar, mentioning issues such as contaminated water discharge, old sewage lines in the lakes, inactive drains, cement umbrellas, and sewage flowing into the lakes. He pointed out that direct sewage flow not only threatens the environment but also creates serious health hazards for citizens as the same water is used by the Public Water Supply Department (PWD) for drinking.
Aligning with the spirit of Swachh Bharat and Water Vision 2047, Ranawat emphasized the importance of lake conservation and made the following demands:
1. The central government should send a high-level inspection team to conduct a thorough investigation into pollution and infrastructural deficiencies.
2. Immediate modernization of the sewage and drainage systems to halt the flow of dirty water into the lakes.
3. Accountability from the local administration to ensure proper conservation of the lakes.
4. Allocation of special central funds for the restoration and sustainable conservation of the lakes.
**Meeting with the Secretary of Water Resources Department, Assurance for Prompt Action**
In addition, Ranawat sent a letter (Letter No: BCI/2025-26/42, dated 18/02/2025) to Debashree Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Water Resources, and met with her during the Water Vision 2047 event at Ananta Resort. During this meeting, which also saw the presence of Kshitij Kumbhat from Udaipur Citizens Society, Ranawat provided insights into the current state of Udaipur's lakes.
The discussion was positive and result-oriented, with Mukherjee assuring swift relief and timely action. She mentioned that the preservation of Udaipur's lakes would be a priority for the central government, and serious steps would be taken in this regard.
Ranawat also ensured that the letter was forwarded to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Tourism), Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, and Municipal Corporation Commissioner, along with all IAS secretaries from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, to facilitate a multi-level action plan for the conservation of the lakes.
The people of Udaipur are hopeful that the central government and local administration will take prompt and decisive action to restore the lakes to their original state and preserve the identity of the "City of Lakes." Ranawat continues to work on the ground, collaborating with various organizations for the positive development of tourism.
