Hindustan Zinc Paving the Way for Women in Science and Technology

Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, takes pride in the exceptional contribution of women in its operations on International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The company, one of India’s largest conglomerates, is leading the way in transforming the metal industry with over 200 women engineers working at its mines and smelters.

With a gender diversity ratio of approximately 25%, Hindustan Zinc employs over 700 women in its core operations, a significantly higher number compared to other companies in India’s manufacturing, metal, and mining sectors. The company has also set remarkable benchmarks, including India’s first female mine manager at an underground mine and the country’s first and second all-women underground rescue teams working on Hindustan Zinc’s sites.

Hindustan Zinc’s women are making unprecedented contributions in engineering, research, geology, and laboratory science, underlining the company’s commitment to promoting female talent in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Notably, over 70% of the company’s female employees come from a science background, actively advancing technological progress in mining, engineering, and core operations.

Hindustan Zinc is also transforming the mining and metal industries by integrating digitalization, Industry 4.0 technology, robotics, and automation, reducing the need for manual labor and making mining more accessible to a diverse workforce. The company’s digital mines, equipped with tele-remote underground mining, real-time analytics, and automation, are rapidly evolving to offer equal career opportunities for all in this developing industry.

Confirming this commitment, Hindustan Zinc’s CEO, Arun Mishra, stated, “Hindustan Zinc is committed to increasing women’s participation in our workforce to 25% by 2025 and to 30% by 2030. By offering women opportunities, especially in science and mining, we are building a future where female talent is not only recognized but also respected in traditionally male-dominated sectors. Our efforts in leadership are not just about gender equality – they are about using diverse perspectives to solve problems and make decisions in complex environments.”

In addition to direct employment, Hindustan Zinc’s social initiative, the Zinc Skill Centre, has trained over 500 women through pre-professional science-related courses such as nursing and electrical work, enhancing their employability and financial independence. As India’s leading mining and metal company, Hindustan Zinc is at the forefront of overcoming barriers and redefining industry standards to promote a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to supporting women at every level has led to progressive policies such as allowing spouses to work, offering year-round child care leave, mental and physical health leave policies, and opportunities for career advancement. Hindustan Zinc is setting a new standard for inclusivity in the mining and metal industries with science-driven innovation and gender diversity.
