Come Children, Let's Visit Hawa Mahal!

India is home to many incredible tourist destinations that fascinate children. Among them, Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal stands out as a masterpiece of architecture. It is considered one of the world’s most significant buildings, symbolizing India's pride and international recognition. Tourists from far and wide visit to witness its beauty. This five-story pink structure, when viewed from the main road, resembles a royal crown or Krishna’s crown.

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh of Jaipur built Hawa Mahal in 1799, and it was designed by architect Lal Chand Ustad. Constructed using red and pink sandstone with lime mortar, the palace features 953 small latticed windows and jharokhas, making it unique. Each window is adorned with intricate carvings, ornamental cornices, and small domes that enhance its beauty. The semi-octagonal jharokhas allow constant airflow inside, giving the palace its name—Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). Interestingly, it is believed to be the only structure in India built without a foundation. Standing 87 feet (26.51 meters) tall, the palace beautifully blends Rajput and Mughal architectural styles.

Hawa Mahal is part of the City Palace complex. The entrance to the palace is through a royal gate located at the back, leading visitors inside. Instead of stairs, a smooth ramp is designed to allow easy access to the upper floors. Both children and adults enjoy peering out of the windows and feeling the cool breeze that flows continuously, even during scorching summers.

The primary reason behind Hawa Mahal’s construction was to provide royal women, who followed the purdah system, an opportunity to observe street processions and public events without being seen. This palace is dedicated to Radha and Krishna and houses three important temples—Govardhan Temple, Prakash Temple, and Hawa Temple.

At the ground level of Hawa Mahal, there is a museum showcasing Jaipur’s ancient artifacts, including old stone tools, iron implements, clay and stone sculptures, weapons, paintings, and exquisite handicrafts. Children visiting the museum can gain valuable insights into history and art, making the visit both educational and enjoyable.
