Khatik Community to Set an Example with Dowry-Free Mass Marriage

Udaipur. The Shri Khatik Samaj National Organization will set a new example in Rajasthan on February 2, when it will host the first-ever mass wedding that will be completely dowry-free and devoid of unnecessary rituals. Preparations for the mass wedding are in full swing. The first ritual of the mass wedding, the "Lagn Likhai" (engagement), was held on Wednesday with a grand procession, attended by a large number of community members.

National President Akash Bagdi shared that the organization's first large-scale mass wedding ceremony will take place on February 2 at Fateh School in Udaipur, coinciding with the Basant Panchami festival. A total of 27 couples have registered for the wedding, including couples from Udaipur, surrounding districts, as well as Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Based on the consensus of the organization's officers and community leaders, the wedding will be completely dowry-free. No dowry or related items will be provided to the couples. This initiative not only sets an example but also sends a message that dowry is a harmful practice that needs to end. Additionally, the community will eliminate small rituals that burden families financially.

Founder of the organization, Jay Nimawat, shared that on February 2, a procession with bands will begin from Hathi Pol, where 27 grooms will ride on horses and brides will travel in carriages. The procession will pass through Dehli Gate, Bapu Bazaar, and Suraj Pol, ultimately reaching Fateh School, where the "Torana" ritual will take place. Following the "Var-Mala" (garland exchange), the wedding vows (Phere) will be exchanged, and a community feast will follow. The wedding will be completed before evening.

National General Secretary Puran Khatik emphasized that the organization made sure to minimize the financial burden on the families of the couples, ensuring the ceremony would be affordable. All arrangements are being made accordingly.
