Udaipur: A two-day skill development training program was organized at the College of Community and Applied Sciences, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, under the National Agricultural Development Scheme project, “Centre of Excellence for Processing of Traditional Crops in Mewar Region.” The training program was held by the Agricultural Science Center (Udaipur-II), Vallabhnagar, with the themes "Millet Processing and Value Addition" and "Turmeric and Ginger Processing and Value Addition." The main objective of this training program was to focus on the processing and value addition of coarse grains (millets), turmeric, and ginger.
Dr. Arvind Verma, Director of Research at the university, highlighted the program's benefits for farmers and women. Dr. Kamla Mahajani, the principal investigator of the project, explained that processing millets, ginger, and turmeric would create employment opportunities for women, allowing them to establish small-scale businesses.
On the first day, participants were trained in millet processing. Dr. Payal Telesara and Ms. Yogita Paliwal taught the techniques for making chocolate from millet varieties like ragi and bajra. Additionally, Ms. Chitrakshi Kashyap, a project machinist, provided information on millet and spice processing machines, along with details on government schemes. She explained that these machines would make processing coarse grains easier for farmers and rural entrepreneurs, creating new sources of income.
On the second day, Ms. Yogita Paliwal taught the preparation of ginger and turmeric products like ginger candy, murabba, and pickles. Dr. Payal Telesara also provided information on marketing, packaging, and labeling of these products. An exhibition of millet-based products was set up, allowing farmers and trainees to learn more about various millet products. The program concluded with a motivation for participants to adopt innovations in the processing sector.
