Padma Shri Artist Premjit Baria Visits Udaipur Explores Bagore Ki Haveli and Information Center

Cultural exchange through children is effortless” – Premjit Baria

Udaipur,  Internationally renowned artist and Padma Shri awardee Premjit Baria visited Udaipur on Wednesday at the invitation of the West Zone Cultural Center. Baria toured Bagore Ki Haveli and the Information Center, engaging in discussions about the Central Government's cultural exchange programs. He emphasized that achieving cultural exchange is much easier through children, as their pure and innocent emotions foster understanding and connection.

Cultural Exchange Across the Nation

Baria highlighted ongoing initiatives aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to promote art and culture through youth and children. He shared his experiences of leading cultural exchange efforts via the 'Bal Bhavan' in Diu, enabling children across India to experience and learn diverse art forms. For instance, children in Diu learned Himachali folk dances while children from Himachal Pradesh mastered Gujarati Dandiya and Portuguese dance forms. Similar initiatives have been held in Himachal's Mandi, Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam, and Karnataka's Shimoga.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

Baria’s artwork has been widely acclaimed, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeting about his artistic representations of Diu’s landmarks in April 2023. Modi praised Baria’s contributions and expressed hope that his work would inspire people to visit Diu. A self-taught artist, Baria began his artistic journey by drawing the natural beauty of his surroundings in Diu during childhood. His sketches of Diu's architectural monuments have significantly contributed to tourism development and earned him the Padma Shri award.

Promoting Children's Talent Through Bal Bhavan

As the Director of Diu’s Bal Bhavan, Baria explained its role in nurturing children’s talents. He called for establishing Bal Bhavans in every district, similar to those in Gujarat, Daman, Diu, and Dadra Nagar Haveli. These centers offer year-round training in various art forms, including painting, dance, drama, embroidery, tailoring, cooking, and computer skills, for children aged 6 to 18.

Encouraging Artistic Pursuits in Schools

During his Udaipur visit, Baria interacted with students at Vidya Bhavan Senior Secondary School and government schools in Dhar and Varada villages. He discussed the importance of art in life and encouraged students to pursue artistic interests. He also engaged with teachers, urging them to connect children with art to enhance their creativity.

Praising Udaipur’s Cultural Richness

Baria admired the exhibits at Bagore Ki Haveli and appreciated the maintenance and development efforts at the Information Center, including the open theater, library, and reading facilities modeled on Jawahar Kala Kendra. He expressed gratitude for the region’s contributions to preserving art and culture while commending the initiatives to support youth and artists.
