**Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India (1947-1964), envisioned a new India and famously said, "We have just gained independence, but our main goal is to achieve swaraj." In his will, he wrote, "The people of this country have given me immense love, and I do not know what I can give in return." With this spirit, Nehru laid the foundation of industries, science, and modernization in India, aiming to alleviate poverty in the country.
Nehru's political philosophy was rooted in the idea that freedom comes from the struggle against colonialism, and from freedom, swaraj (self-rule) can be built. Under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru helped lead India to independence, and the Russian Bolshevik Revolution inspired him to further the concept of social change in India.
After Nehru, India has yet to create an alternative model for development. However, the principles of democracy, socialism, and secularism that he championed still shape the nation’s politics and society. His vision on Kashmir’s integration with India and the partition of India and Pakistan laid the foundation for India’s unity and integrity.
Nehru was a proponent of equality, justice, and peace, and firmly believed that India's development could only be achieved through science and industrialization. He embraced a mixed economy, aiming to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.
Nehru’s legacy is still a proud part of the Congress party's history, and his vision remains the cornerstone of India’s democracy. His life and work continue to inspire. His contributions to the Non-Aligned Movement and his belief in a united India above caste, religion, and language have shaped India's global stance. His famous words, "India's future will be written by these children," are still relevant today, as Nehru laid the groundwork for a bright future for children and the younger generation.
