MPUAT Signs MoU for Groundnut Research with ICAR Directorate, Junagadh

Maharana Pratap Agriculture and Technology University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ICAR Groundnut Research Directorate in Junagadh to enhance research and development in groundnut and increase farmers' income.

This agreement aims to facilitate the sharing of resources between the two institutions, provide research and training opportunities for students and faculty, achieve self-reliance in edible oils, and ensure nutrition and livelihood security for the country while improving the productivity and quality of groundnuts.

The MoU was signed by Honorable Vice Chancellor Dr. Ajit Kumar Karnataka from Maharana Pratap Agriculture and Technology University, Udaipur, and Dr. S.K. Bera, Director of the ICAR Groundnut Research Directorate. During the event, Vice Chancellor Dr. Karnataka mentioned that the All India Coordinated Groundnut Research Project was initiated in 1993, significantly contributing to groundnut research and development. The university has developed a groundnut variety, Pratap Groundnut-3 (UG 116).

He noted that Rajasthan is the second-largest groundnut-producing state in India, with an estimated production of approximately 1.895 million tons in the 2023-24 season, accounting for about 17-18% of the country's total. Both institutions will collaborate in the field of research, which will also contribute to increasing revenue generation for the university, the groundnut research directorate, and the country as a whole.

Research Director Dr. Arvind Verma highlighted that the university has developed several high-yielding, drought-resistant, and disease-resistant varieties of crops such as wheat, maize, chickpeas, and groundnuts, contributing to the agricultural productivity of the state. He stated that this is a significant day for MPUAT and ICAR-DGR as they join forces to enhance oilseed production under the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" campaign.

Dr. S.K. Bera, Director of the Groundnut Research Directorate, explained that the directorate is a leading research institution in India focused on groundnut research and development. Its primary objective is to innovate in groundnut breeding, genetics, and agricultural sciences to enhance productivity, sustainability, and quality. This institution plays a vital role in advancing groundnut research, significantly contributing to the oilseed sector in India and ensuring food security through innovative agricultural practices.

At the end of the program, Dr. P.B. Singh, Project In-Charge of the Groundnut Research Project, expressed gratitude to all attendees. The event was conducted by Dr. Latika Sharma, and senior members of the university's administrative council were also present during the signing of the MoU.
