Feeding Birds Disrupts Ecological Balance - Anurag

Kota . As part of Wildlife Week, a group of about 50 students, led by Deputy Conservator of Forests Anurag Bhattnagar, conducted a morning forest excursion at the Gopalpura Bird Sanctuary in Kanwas. During the visit, they learned about various birds and local flora.
Anurag Bhattnagar explained to the students that birds such as parrots, sparrows, and pigeons naturally feed on insects, which helps maintain ecological balance. He emphasized that feeding birds disrupts this balance, negatively impacting insect populations. "By feeding birds, we harm natural equilibrium, so we should refrain from this practice," he stated.
He further noted that despite housing around 150 bird species, Gopalpura Bird Sanctuary remains largely unexplored by tourists and bird enthusiasts. Many migratory birds visit the sanctuary during winter. He described it as a tranquil place, comparable to paradise for birdwatchers. The site was developed just two years ago; previously, encroachments had led to farming on the forest land, which has since been cleared to transform it into a beautiful bird sanctuary. Covering approximately 70 hectares, the construction of ponds is still ongoing.
Anurag provided detailed information on bird nesting, egg-laying, and chick-rearing, mentioning that modern technology allows the installation of cameras in nests to monitor the activities of hatching chicks.
Coordinator of the waterbird community, Brajesh Vijayvargiya, advised children not to throw plastic bags around but to dispose of them properly in trash bins. Bird enthusiasts Sunil Singhal, Vijay Maheshwari, and D.K. Sharma also shared various insights about birds.
Students from Lord Krishna School, led by Suhani Vyas, and from Adarsh Senior Secondary School in Nanta, led by Mahaveer Meena, observed the entire bird sanctuary in small groups, showing keen interest and finding the event extremely beneficial.
