Successful Surgery for Rare Condition Trichobezoar at Pacific Hospital

Udaipur :  Doctors at Pacific Medical College and Hospital, Bheelon Ka Bedla, successfully performed surgery on a 16-year-old girl, removing a hairball the size of a cricket ball from her stomach. The girl was suffering from a rare condition known as **Trichobezoar**, which is linked to the habit of eating hair, often associated with **Trichophagia**—a psychological disorder commonly seen in adolescents.

The girl's family brought her to Pacific Hospital due to complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting. After consultation with Dr. S.G. Mehta from the Psychiatry Department, the patient underwent examinations and an endoscopy, which revealed a large mass of hair in her stomach. She was then admitted to the surgery unit under the supervision of Professor Dr. Renu Rova.

A CT scan confirmed the presence of the cricket-sized hairball, which could only be treated through surgical intervention. The successful operation involved a dedicated team, including Professor Dr. Renu Rova, Dr. Uday Tambe, Dr. Ashu Tiwari, Dr. Ravi Ranjan, Dr. Ankit, Dr. Akashdeep, Dr. Shubham, Dr. Sumit, Dr. Gulnaz, and anesthesiologists Dr. Prakash Audichya, Dr. Sameer Goyal, Dr. Nikuj, and Shehnaz Sheikh.

Dr. Renu Rova explained that the connection between the stomach and small intestine had completely blocked, preventing food from passing. Due to the size and sticky nature of the hairball, an open surgery called laparotomy was necessary, as extraction via endoscopy would have been exceedingly complicated.

Dr. Rova noted that Trichobezoar is a rare condition typically linked to Trichophagia, a psychological disorder where individuals consume hair. If left untreated, it can lead to malnutrition, anemia, and gastrointestinal bleeding.

The girl is now fully recovered and has been discharged from the hospital. Her treatment was provided free of charge, thanks to the management's support. The patient’s family expressed their gratitude to PMC's Chairman Rahul Agarwal, Executive Director Aman Agarwal, the medical team, and the nursing staff for giving their daughter a new lease on life.
