Ashok Gehlot’s New Political Strategy: Protests at Gandhi Vatika Museum to Prepare for Upcoming By-Elections in Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, as by-elections for seven assembly seats are set to take place in October and November, both the BJP and Congress are busy strategizing. Leaders from both parties are also involved in ongoing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. Political analysts suggest that Congress's position in Haryana is strong, which has boosted the morale of its leaders.

Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, who has recovered from his slip disc, is now fully active in politics. To bring some momentum to the political scene in Rajasthan, he plans to hold a ground-level awareness campaign along with his Gandhi-supporting allies. This will involve a protest at the Gandhi Vatika Museum in Jaipur on September 28, from 11 AM to 4 PM, aimed at demanding the opening of the museum, which Gehlot constructed during his tenure. The museum, built at a cost of around ₹85 crore, has remained closed for a year despite being completed.

Gehlot had previously urged Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to inaugurate the museum, dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, but it has yet to be opened to the public. With Bhajan Lal's government in place for about nine months now, Congress has attempted to challenge the BJP on various issues, achieving victories in 11 Lok Sabha seats. However, in these nine months, Congress has not organized a significant protest against the Bhajan Lal government, despite regular media statements from senior leaders like Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, and state president Govind Singh Dotasra.

In light of these circumstances, Gehlot is reinitiating a grassroots campaign surrounding the Gandhi Vatika Museum. His unique political style involves leveraging the legacy of Gandhi to make an impact in the upcoming assembly by-elections and local elections.

While speaking to reporters, Gehlot criticized the BJP government for not opening the museum to the public despite its inauguration in Central Park, Jaipur. He emphasized the significance of the ₹85 crore world-class museum and reiterated his personal appeals to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for its opening. As a symbol of protest, he and like-minded individuals will hold a demonstration at Gate No. 5 of Central Park, Jaipur, on September 28, demanding that the museum be opened to the public.

Additionally, Gehlot commented on the formation of new districts, stating that this decision was taken after careful consideration and should be viewed as an experiment. He pointed out that there is scope for more districts in Rajasthan, referencing Haryana, where a new district is created every 40 kilometers. He stated that effective management depends on how the districts are operated. Gehlot also made a bold claim about the upcoming Haryana assembly elections, asserting that Congress will achieve a landslide victory.

It remains to be seen how Gehlot's Gandhi-inspired approach to opening the Gandhi Vatika Museum will influence the political landscape in Rajasthan and shape strategies for the upcoming by-elections.
