Balanced Perspective on Life and Positive Thinking can Prevent Suicidal Incidents - Dr. Agrawal

Kota  - In an effort to prevent suicide incidents, Dr. M.L. Agrawal, a senior mental health expert in Kota, highlighted the various factors contributing to suicide, such as familial, social, economic, personal issues, mental health issues (depression), stress, disorders, economic problems, love relationships, and exam-related stress. Dr. Agrawal emphasized that adopting a balanced perspective on life and maintaining a positive mindset can significantly control such incidents.

Under the Suicide Prevention Awareness Campaign, Dr. Agrawal pointed out that those contemplating suicide often seek help. Recognizing the signs and offering assistance is crucial. Common indicators include insomnia, loss of appetite, social withdrawal, talking about death, sharing personal belongings, seeking forgiveness, and discussing clearing debts. Identifying these signs can potentially save lives.

He mentioned that due to family values and cultural influences, the suicide rate in India is relatively lower compared to Western countries. Everyone can contribute to helping those in need, and it is not necessary to be a doctor or healthcare professional. If someone is feeling unwell, it's essential to ask directly whether they are contemplating self-harm or suicide.

Dr. Agrawal recommended supporting individuals with depression, encouraging them to consult a doctor, and motivating them to seek regular treatment. Through culture, life becomes invaluable, and imparting knowledge about regular exercise, pranayama, meditation, and the art of living in the present can be inspirational.

He emphasized that suicide is not just an issue in India but a global concern. Worldwide, an estimated 800,000 people die by suicide annually, with more than 25 times that number attempting suicide. Countries like Lithuania, South Korea, Russia, China, etc., report higher suicide rates. In India, states like Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, etc., witness higher rates. Approximately 1.39 lakh people in India lose their lives to suicide each year, with the highest rate observed between the ages of 18-45.
