GMCH: Advanced orbital tumour successfully treated with a multidisciplinary approach

The advanced orbital tumour of a 58-year-old female patient resident of Bhilwara was successfully treated free of cost under Chief Minister Chiranjeevi Yojana with a multidisciplinary approach.

Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital has treated a 58-year-old female patient resident of Bhilwara with a multidisciplinary approach. She was recently successfully operated upon for a rare tumour, and the patient was provided with a new life.

Cancer surgeon Dr Ashish Jakhetia, Dr Ajay Yadav, and anesthesiologist Dr Naveen Patidar. And Neurosurgeon Dr Uday Bhowmick, Dr Govind Mangal and their team. Jointly worked on this high-risk operation.

Detailed information:

Dr Ashish informed that when the 58-year-old patient came to Geetanjali Cancer Center, the patient's left eye was completely damaged due to worms and the eyesight was also lost. An advanced-stage tumour had developed in the patient's eye, due to which many hospitals refused to treat the patient. After the patient came to Geetanjali Cancer Center, all the worms were removed by cleaning her eyes in the first stage. After this, necessary tests were done on the patient, in which it was found that the tumour had entirely spread in the patient's left eye. The tumour had started entering the eye through the central nerve of the left eye, which is called the optic nerve, but had not reached the brain. This type of tumour was discussed in a multidisciplinary board with a medical, surgical and radiation team of doctors. With all the doctors' advice for the patient, radical surgery was planned for this type of aggressive cancer. Since the patient's tumour had gone deep inside the eye, there is a danger of loss of vision in the other eye when the tumour is removed. In such a situation, joint surgery was planned in which the team of cancer surgeons and neurosurgeons simultaneously performed surgery on the patient. The team of cancer surgeons completely removed the tumour from the patient's eye, and the team of neurosurgeons cut the bone between the head and the eye, identified the nerves of the eyes inside the brain, and safely separated the cancerous vein from the brain.

Dr Uday Bhaumik said that the optical nerve of the patient was divided into two parts so that the patient's eye was successfully freed from the tumour. After this, the patient's eye, which had deteriorated due to an advanced tumour, removed the tumour from it. The cancer surgeons performed plastic surgery and reconstructed the damaged part of the eye.

Prateem Tamboli, CEO of GMCH, informed that this kind of rare surgery is possible in the Quaternary Care Center, Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital is a Quaternary Care Center where all the doctors of different departments have world-class medical facilities under one roof. They are continuously treating the patients coming here with the latest techniques.

The patient is from an impoverished family, so bearing the cost of such a complicated surgery was burdensome. Such complex treatment was done free of charge under the Mukhyamantri Chiranjeevi Yojana. The patient thanked Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for free treatment under Chiranjeevi Yojana and also thanked Geetanjali Hospital and the team of doctors treating her.
