Demand to Preserve Ancient Idol in Museum

Dr. Prabhat Kumar Singhal

Jhalawar – The Tourism Development Committee, Jhalawar, submitted a memorandum to the Jhalawar Sub-Divisional Officer on Monday, requesting that an archaeologically significant ancient idol, currently neglected in the old PWD warehouse, be relocated to the local museum for preservation.

Committee coordinator Om Pathak stated that the idol, located near a well in the warehouse, has been abandoned for years. Due to exposure to air and water, its artistic details are deteriorating, and being in the open, it is at risk of being stolen by idol smugglers. He emphasized that shifting it to the museum would ensure its safety and allow tourists to view it.

Senior Vice President and historian Lalit Sharma explained that based on studies, the idol represents Dikpal Agnidev and was likely positioned in the southeast (Agneya) direction of a temple. The beard of Agnidev in the idol features a broken knot, symbolizing the control of fire’s flames. According to artistic features, the idol is from the 12th century and was possibly relocated from another temple site. It is positioned between two pillar niches and is adorned with beautifully carved celestial maidens (Apsaras).
