AI-powered ‘Safe Network’ solutions identify 4.4 billion spam messages and block more than 1.62 million malicious links New Delhi: India’s digital economy is expanding rapidly, but the growing adoption of digital services is also being accompanied by an increase in the scale and sophistication of cyber fraud. Threats that were once largely limited to spam calls and phishing messages have evolved into a broader fraud ecosystem involving identity theft scams, fake banking requests, malicious links, investment fraud and financial scams involving OTPs. According to data from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Indians have lost more than ₹52,976 crore to cyber fraud over the past six years. Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) also indicates that while overall crime levels have declined, reported cybercrime cases have continued to rise. As digital services become increasingly embedded in banking, payments, healthcare, commerce and government services, telecom networks are playing a growing role in digital security. Consumers are increasingly expecting network providers to go beyond connectivity and help identify and mitigate risks associated with digital communications. Two years ago, Bharti Airtel adopted a first-mover approach to customer protection. In September 2024, the company launched what it described as India’s first network-based, AI-powered spam detection solution, combining network intelligence with artificial intelligence to protect customers from spam calls and SMS messages. Over the past two years, Airtel has expanded its AI-powered Safe Network initiative as part of its broader efforts to prevent fraud at the network level. The approach is designed to operate in the background, without requiring customers to install additional applications or manually report suspicious activity. Airtel’s Safe Network has now evolved into a broader suite of network-based digital security tools. The company said its solutions have so far: Blocked 98.4 billion spam calls Identified 4.4 billion spam messages Blocked more than 1.62 million malicious links The initiative is aimed at strengthening digital safety by detecting potential threats at the network level before they can reach customers. By combining AI capabilities with telecom network intelligence, Airtel is seeking to create a security layer that works automatically in the background. As digital fraud continues to become more sophisticated, network-level detection and prevention are emerging as an important component of the broader digital security ecosystem, alongside customer awareness, banking safeguards and law-enforcement measures.
