An 8-year-old Innocent Receives Gender Affirmation Surgery at Pacific Medical College and Hospital, Udaipur

Udaipur: At Pacific Medical College and Hospital, situated in Bedla, Udaipur, a successful gender affirmation surgery was performed on an 8-year-old child, providing them with a new life and enabling social acceptance, thus allowing them to live their life normally. In this surgery, Dr. Praveen Jhanwar, a pediatric and neonatal surgeon, along with Dr. Prakash Oudichya and the team consisting of Dr. Swati Sharma, Dr. Puneet Jain, Dr. Palak Jain, Subhash Sharma, Vishnu, Sanjay, Manish, and others, made this transformation possible.

In Southern Rajasthan, this kind of surgery is seen as a ray of hope for patients with this rare congenital condition. The child had been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at birth due to medical issues. During the evaluation, it was discovered that the child's internal organs were female, while the external anatomy resembled a male. Moreover, the child had a hairstyle and dressing style that was feminine.

The child was suffering from Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic disorder that can be treated through surgery, involving gender affirmation. Gender affirmation surgery is a complex decision that is made after receiving consent from the patient's family. Approximately four hours of dedicated effort by the medical team led to a successful surgery.

Dr. Jhanwar explained that Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia is a rare genetic condition that arises from a deficiency of certain essential enzymes during pregnancy. This hormonal imbalance can result in serious medical conditions, ambiguous genitalia, premature puberty, developmental issues, and more.

Only one in 15,000 children is affected by this condition, and its management requires surgical intervention and hormonal therapy.

The child's family expressed their gratitude to the Chairman of PMCH, Rahul Agrawal, all the doctors, the hospital's management, the nursing staff, and the entire team for their invaluable support.

The child is now healthy and has been discharged from the hospital, enjoying a new lease on life.
