Caste Record Errors Can Be Corrected by Tehsildar

(mohsina bano)

Udaipur: If there is an error in the caste or category mentioned in land records, an application can be submitted to the concerned Tehsildar for correction. This clarification was provided by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in response to a letter from Udaipur MP Dr. Manna Lal Rawat.

MP Rawat had written to Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, raising concerns that in the Udaipur and Chittorgarh districts, particularly in Vallabhnagar, Kanod, Bhinder, Doongra, and Badi Sadri, the surname "Rawat" was being misinterpreted as a caste indicator, leading to Scheduled Tribe (ST) members being categorized as Other Backward Classes (OBC).

MP Rawat stated that this misclassification has negatively impacted the constitutional rights of the Scheduled Tribe community, affecting their land ownership, employment, education, and political reservations. He urged the government to take action on the matter.

Ministry’s Response

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs sought clarification from the Rajasthan government, which confirmed that Scheduled Tribes in the state receive educational, governmental, and constitutional benefits based on caste certificates, issued as per the Scheduled Tribes list notified by the Government of India in 1976.

Additionally, under Section 136 of the Rajasthan Land Revenue Act, 1956, any clerical error or misclassification in land records can be corrected by the revenue officer during inspection. If an individual’s caste or category is incorrectly recorded in land records, they can submit an application to the Tehsildar for correction.

Furthermore, if a complaint regarding such errors is received, a detailed investigation will be conducted.
