Commemorative Postage Stamp to be Issued for Tirthankara Parsvanath

Udaipur | The Indian government will issue a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of the 2900th birth anniversary and the 2800th nirvana anniversary of Tirthankara Lord Parsvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism.

This information was provided by Union Minister for Communications and Northeast Development Jyotiraditya Scindia in a letter dated September 11, 2024, following a request from BJP MP Brijmohan Agrawal from Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Notably, the Jain community had previously urged the Union Minister for the issuance of a commemorative stamp featuring Tirthankara Parsvanath.

Sharman Dr. Pushpendra stated that the life of Tirthankara Parsvanath is considered an ideal of non-violence and compassion. He spread the banner of non-violence across India for 70 years, awakening and enlightening all living beings. By eliminating superstitions, social evils, and deep-rooted dogmas, he ignited the light of right perception (samyak darshan) in every home, showing the path of non-violence, truth, non-stealing, and non-possessiveness. The issuance of a postage stamp in his honor is a matter of joy and pride for the entire Jain community.

It is noteworthy that the 2900th birth anniversary celebration of Tirthankara Lord Parsvanath will be held with great enthusiasm across the country on December 25, 2024 (Paus Krishna Dasham).

Additionally, the first postage stamp dedicated to Jainism was issued by the government on May 6, 1935, featuring an image of the Shitalnath Jain Temple in Kolkata. This temple, built in 1868, is renowned for its artistic work with mirrors and mosaic on its walls and ceilings. This stamp, valued at 1-114 annas, was part of a set of four stamps commemorating temples and pilgrimage sites, released on the occasion of the silver jubilee of King George V's reign.
