‘Punyashlok’ Play on Ahilyabai Holkar Mesmerizes Audience at Shilpgram

Udaipur: Under the monthly theatre series *‘Rangshala’* organized by the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC), Udaipur, a three-day theatre event began on Friday with the staging of *‘Punyashlok’*, a play based on the life of Ahilyabai Holkar. The play was performed at the Darpan Auditorium in Shilpgram and captivated the audience with its powerful storytelling and stellar performances.

WZCC Director Furqan Khan shared that the play *‘Punyashlok’* marked the opening day of the three-day theatrical series held as part of the monthly event *‘Rangshala’*. The play is written by Arun Shekhar and Nand Kishore Pant, and directed by Nand Kishore Pant. Art lovers in attendance greatly appreciated the performances and the portrayal of characters.

Dignitaries such as WZCC Deputy Director (Programmes) Pawan Amarawat, Assistant Director (Finance & Accounts) Durgesh Chandwani, Hemant Mehta, Siddhant Bhatnagar, and several notable city guests were present. At the end of the event, all the artists were felicitated. The program was hosted by Durgesh Chandwani.

**About the Play:**
The play *‘Punyashlok’* highlights a chapter of Indian history that remains incomplete without the mention of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Malwa. During her reign, she undertook significant and inspirational work, earning the title ‘Punyashlok’. On the occasion of her 300th birth anniversary, Mumbai-based *Sahaj Kalatmak Foundation*, in collaboration with *Pant Drama Forum* and *Drama Drafting*, produced the play. It has since been staged at multiple venues.

The play showcases how a woman, through determination and righteousness, can guide not only her family but also society. It reinforces the idea that a person becomes truly great when their deeds serve the people—hence, Ahilyabai was honored with the title ‘Punyashlok’. The performances were impactful, with the young Ahilyabai leaving a lasting impression. Preeti Jha as the mother, Anand as the old man, and Shashwat Srivastava as the rebellious husband stood out with their compelling portrayals.

**Upcoming Performances:**
On Saturday, April 12, the play *‘Chak’* will be staged by Little Thespian, Kolkata, followed by *‘Endgame’* on Sunday, April 13. Both performances will begin at 7 PM at Darpan Auditorium, Shilpgram, Udaipur.
*‘Chak’* is written by S.M. Azhar Alam and directed by Uma Jhunjhunwala.
*‘Endgame’* is written by Samuel Beckett and also directed by Uma Jhunjhunwala.
The entry to the performances is free and open to all.
