The availability of abundant oil and gas reserves in the desert-dominated region of Western Rajasthan is seen as a positive sign for the state's prosperity, particularly in the principal regions of Barmar, Jaisalmer, and now, the extended areas around Bikaner. ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) is actively advancing exploration efforts in this direction. If the expectations and estimates materialize, Rajasthan could potentially dominate the Asian landscape much like Dubai did with the discovery of oil.
Industrial development in Bikaner is also rapidly advancing. A significant investment of INR 40,000 crores has been made in the solar energy sector in this region. Survey results until February 20, 2024, indicate the likelihood of substantial oil and gas reserves in the Bikaner-Nagaur Basin, covering an area of 2118 square kilometers. The survey, costing over 48 crores, has initiated drilling activities in two locations near Nal and one at the Salasar village in Kolayat. The estimated expenditure for this drilling work is more than 49 crores. The drilling will assess the quality, reserves, and samples of oil and gas. Significantly, traces of lithium, helium, and hydrogen have been found, and exploration for underground water is also underway, promising positive changes in the industrial development landscape.
Central Minister of Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, expressed at an event marking the commencement of drilling by ONGC, that development in every sector is essential for a developed India. The prospect of new discoveries in the subsoil is indeed fortunate for Bikaner. Sushma Rawat, Director (Exploration) of ONGC, mentioned that ONGC plans to establish skill development centers, medical health facilities, and e-learning through CSR activities for the residents of the region. Collaborative programs with university students and skill development initiatives are also on the agenda.
In addition to the ongoing developments, the construction of a 72,000 crore INR oil refinery and petrochemical complex in Pachpadra, between Barmar and Jodhpur in Western Rajasthan, along with new oil and gas reservoirs, is poised to open the gates of prosperity for Rajasthan. It remains to be seen how swiftly the Indian and Rajasthan governments leverage these exploration efforts to unlock the doors to prosperity in the desert landscape.
