Old Age Homes Are Not Our Tradition but a Western Influence – Governor

Udaipur, Governor Shri Hari Bhau Bagde emphasized that India follows the traditional four stages of life – Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha, and Sannyasa – but not old age homes. He stated that old age homes are a Western concept where senior citizens are often seen as a burden. He expressed these views while addressing the 22nd National Conference of the All India Senior Citizens Confederation (AISCCON) as the chief guest at Swami Vivekananda Auditorium, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, on Saturday.

Governor Bagde urged senior citizens to prioritize their health, as a healthy body is the greatest wealth. He highlighted their invaluable experience and encouraged them to dedicate their remaining years to the nation and its spiritual values.

Addressing senior citizens from various parts of India and Nepal, the Governor pointed out that centuries of colonial rule have deeply impacted our mindset. He noted that British rule destroyed India’s ancient education system and replaced it with Western education, causing a disconnect from India’s rich knowledge traditions.

Citing the law of gravity, he mentioned that Bhaskaracharya had already established this principle in the 12th century, yet credit is often given to Newton. He further stated that India gave the world the concept of zero and the decimal system, which form the foundation of modern technology. The New Education Policy introduced by the central government aims to revive and restore India’s ancient knowledge traditions in the coming years.

Unveiling of ‘Anubhooti’

During the event, the Governor unveiled the AISCCON souvenir magazine ‘Anubhooti’ and honored several senior citizens.

The event was graced by Vice-Chancellor of Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University, Prof. S.S. Sarangdevot, AISCCON President V.K. Bhadane, and other distinguished guests.

Earlier, the Governor arrived at Dabok Airport and proceeded to Circuit House, where he was welcomed by dignitaries. District Collector Namit Mehta and other officials were also present during his arrival and departure.
