Strong Political Will is Key to Success of Mega Events Like the Rising Rajasthan Global Summit

The Rising Rajasthan Global Summit, set to take place from December 9 to 11, 2024, in Jaipur, has generated excitement among investors following a successful two-day roadshow and investor meet in New Delhi led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma. The chief minister is pleased with the outcome, and the officials of the Rajasthan government are also encouraged. There is hope that with the seriousness and planned approach that Chief Minister Sharma and his team are applying to ensure the grandeur and success of this mega event, it could achieve significant results, provided investors receive essential infrastructure support—such as roads, electricity, water, low-interest loans, and other attractive packages—and, most importantly, hassle-free services from the state administration for their projects.

During a roadshow in Mumbai, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma emphasized his commitment by quickly approving the proposal from K.C. Bokadia to establish a film city in Jaipur. Experts believe that such strong political will is crucial for the success of mega events.

Due to its proximity to the national capital, domestic and foreign investors have historically shown interest in setting up projects in Rajasthan. The increasing congestion in Delhi and surrounding areas is also a contributing factor. However, past Rajasthan Global Summits have seen several investment proposals that have not materialized for various reasons, with the lack of guaranteed hassle-free services and a conducive environment being the primary hurdles.

Rajasthan is famous for its tourism industry, which is considered the backbone of the state’s economic prosperity. Heritage tourism holds particular significance, with centuries-old historical treasures scattered throughout the state. Rajasthan is often referred to as an "Open Art Gallery," with many heritage sites being renowned worldwide. Currently, Rajasthan is the largest state in India by area and attracts a significant number of domestic and foreign tourists; more than half of the tourists visiting India come to Rajasthan.

Experts believe that while Rajasthan offers immense investment potential across various sectors, focusing on tourism alone could elevate the state to the forefront of the country’s tourism landscape. The state is rich in historic forts, palaces, ancient havelis, religious sites, and natural reserves. If the Rajasthan government can secure special status for tourism and heritage, it could lead to a surge in investment in this sector. Many small countries globally have successfully enhanced their economic growth solely through tourism.

Currently, with Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat hailing from Rajasthan, the state has an opportunity to attract investors by focusing on preserving its grand havelis. These exquisite structures, adorned with stunning architecture and intricate paintings, captivate foreign tourists, but their preservation is crucial; otherwise, they may fall victim to time.

The initiative to convert the state’s historical heritage into hotels and royal guest houses began during Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s tenure as Chief Minister, resulting in several palaces, forts, and havelis being transformed into five-star heritage hotels. Additionally, Ashok Gehlot held the first conference for non-resident Indians in Jaipur during his initial term, aiming to emotionally connect them to their homeland. He believed that strong bonds would naturally lead to investment, as there isn’t a place in the world where Marwaris do not reside, and the tradition of Bhamashah is ingrained in Rajasthan’s culture.

In later years, Vasundhara Raje made significant efforts to establish events like the Rajasthan Global Summit on a grand scale, achieving notable success. Following suit, Ashok Gehlot organized similar events, and now, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma is demonstrating his political will in his first term to make this mega event successful. His vision for the next four years includes following up on investment proposals and translating them into reality.

It remains to be seen how Rajasthan, once considered a backward state, will contribute to fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047.
