On the occasion of India's 76th Republic Day, six water warriors from Rajasthan were honored for their remarkable contributions under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). This mission, aimed at providing clean drinking water in rural India, has become a symbol of development and equality.
Gudha Bhagnawan Das village in Nagaur district’s Khinwsar block once faced a severe water crisis. Women had to walk 2-3 kilometers daily to fetch water from a community pond. The water was often unsafe, leading to frequent outbreaks of waterborne diseases that significantly affected the health and livelihood of the community.
Amid these challenges, Smt. Dhapu Devi emerged as a beacon of hope. As the president of the Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC), she spearheaded efforts to solve the village's water crisis. Through awareness campaigns and regular meetings, she educated the villagers on the importance of clean and safe drinking water. Inspired by her leadership, the villagers collectively contributed ₹8 lakhs, strengthening the project.
With careful planning, coordination among contractors, government departments, and the community, and the appointment of a dedicated coordinator, the village achieved 100% tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Today, every household in Gudha Bhagnawan Das has access to safe and reliable drinking water. This transformation has significantly reduced waterborne diseases, freed women from the burden of fetching water, and allowed families to focus on farming and other productive activities, increasing their income and improving their quality of life.
Smt. Dhapu Devi's visionary leadership has laid the foundation for a sustainable water supply system in the village. Her efforts not only empowered the community but also demonstrated the power of collective action.
Reflecting on her journey, she said, "Jal Jeevan Mission has taught us that water management is not the responsibility of a single person but a collective effort. Together, we are building a healthy and sustainable future for our village."
The success story of Gudha Bhagnawan Das is not just about clean water but also a testament to resilience, empowerment, and the strength of working together.
