Jaipur : A free workshop on traditional folk art of Assam 'Assamese Manuscript painting' will be organized for the artist community -'The Circle', on Friday, January 21 at 3 pm.The workshop will be organized by the Rooftop App and hosted by Rajasthan Studio. The workshop is being organized under the initiative - Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (Celebrating India @ 75). Mridu Bora, a senior artist from Assam, will conduct the workshop.
Mridu Bora has an experience of over 20 years. He has been associated with the different cultural and artistic traditions of Assam like manuscript painting, mask making, wood carving, terracotta, etc. He has written extensively on manuscript conservation too. He uses the traditional and folk elements in his paintings, reviving them from the verge of extinction. He is one of the only artists alive out of the artists who have painted 5 manuscripts as per tradition of the Shankari painting style.
It is remarkable that manuscript painting in Assam is part of a rich cultural heritage of Assam and India. The major part of Assamese traditional painting consists of manuscript paintings. The reforms in the Assam school of painting were due to the Bhakti movement initiated by Saint Shankaradeva. During the British and post-independence period, the significance of manuscript paintings was reduced. However, a few artists did not let the tradition of this painting die via their dedicated work. During the British Rule and the post-independence period, there was a reduction in the acceptance of the manuscript painting. However, even now some artists have kept this traditional painting style alive by their dedicated efforts.
