Jio’s 5G Speed Outperforms Airtel at Mahakumbh: Ookla Report

New Delhi: Reliance Jio, India’s largest telecom operator, delivered an exceptional performance at the Mahakumbh Mela with its 5G network speed and availability surpassing rival Bharti Airtel, according to a report by Ookla. The report revealed that 5G speeds at Mahakumbh were nearly nine times faster than 4G.
Mahakumbh Mela, which was held in Prayagraj from early January to the end of February, witnessed Jio leading the 5G network performance. Jio recorded an average download speed of 201.87 Mbps, whereas Airtel followed at 165.23 Mbps. This meant Jio’s 5G speed was nearly 36 Mbps faster than Airtel’s.
Currently, Jio and Airtel are the only telecom operators offering 5G services in India. In terms of network availability, Jio again took the lead, with 89.9% 5G network availability across the Mahakumbh grounds, compared to Airtel’s 42.4%, making Jio’s coverage more than double that of Airtel. This ensured better connectivity and coverage for Jio users during the event.
Despite the massive crowds at Mahakumbh, 5G networks significantly outperformed 4G. At the beginning of January, 5G download speeds peaked at 259.67 Mbps, but dropped to 151.09 Mbps on January 26, before recovering to 206.82 Mbps by the end of the festival. Even during peak congestion, users experienced minimal delays in browsing and video playback, highlighting the robust performance of 5G networks at the grand event.
