Indian Railways is committed to maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation across all its trains. The railways are continuously working to ensure a clean and safe travel environment for all passengers. According to Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, the railways are consistently working to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness in railway premises and trains.
It has been observed that sometimes waste from moving trains is thrown onto the railway tracks, causing not only litter but also posing a serious safety hazard. To address this, stations have been designated for the collection and disposal of waste from pantry cars on long-distance trains. At these designated stations, waste from the pantry cars is offloaded by the staff and properly disposed of in designated dump yards.
Eight stations on the North Western Railway—Rewari, Jaipur, Ajmer, Abu Road, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur—have been equipped with these facilities. Periodic inspections by railway officials ensure proper waste disposal from pantry cars, and offenders are penalized according to regulations.
Recently, a vigilant passenger captured a video of a pantry car throwing waste onto the railway tracks on the Northeast Frontier Railway. Following the complaint, the railway administration took immediate action, imposing a fine of ₹15,000 on the concerned firm through IRCTC and issuing a strict warning. Similarly, in another incident on the East Central Railway, the RPF took action against the pantry car staff, arresting them under the Railway Act.
The railway administration appeals to all esteemed passengers not to litter and to prevent others from doing so. Be responsible citizens and report any incidents of littering immediately.
