V.R. Mehta receives the Padma Shri Award

Shri Veerendra Raj Mehta has been awarded the Padma Shri award for social work for 2015.He is a volunteer Executive Director, BhagwanMahaveerViklangSahayataSamiti (BMVSS), Jaipur, associated with it since its 1975 inception.
While at the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines, he establishedthe Mahaveer Philippines Foundation Inc. (MPFI), a JAIPUR FOOT body.
MPFI built up enormous goodwill in the Philippines. In 1993 Mr. and Mrs. Mehta were presented the Key of City of Manila, and adopted as Son and Daughter of Manila - a rare honour and a first for Indians.
Again, in a rare honour, in 2010 the Philippine House of Representatives (the lower house of parliament) honored and acknowledged Shri Mehta’s continued help and guidance to MPFI in improving JAIPUR FOOT’s reach and impact in the Philippines.
In July 2014, disregarding personal safety and undeterred by almost routine rocket and fidayeenattacks he led a team to Kabul, Afghanistan to fit limbs for about 1,000 amputees. Previously, he participated in a similar Kabul mission in 2005.
Currently, he is carrying out a Jaipur Foot limb fitment camp in Jammu and Kashmir which is supported by the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
Mr. V.R. Mehta has also been associated for many years, as Trustee, with charitable activities of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Mumbai, among India’s oldest and most respected private trusts.
He comes from an illustrious family of intellectuals and socially committed individuals from Jodhpur and currently makes his home in New Delhi.
